Washington Essay Competition

Washington Essay Competition began as an educational event that invited participation from junior high and high school students living in the greater Washington, D.C. area. Initially, the competition sought primarily the participation of students of Asian descent who did not speak English as their first language.

Today, Washington Essay Competition seeks the participation of young scholars from diverse cultural and personal backgrounds. Thanks to the invaluable contributions of several volunteering advisors and parents across the country (as well as innovative technologies that allow students to submit and verify the authenticity of their final essays in a timely and secure manner), the competition can now be administered fairly (in dynamic, digital online settings) for all participating students. The competition can be enjoyed by students from broad geographic backgrounds, whether they are in San Francisco, California or Des Moines, Iowa or Washington, D.C.

Primary Objectives of the Competition:

  • To encourage young people to discover the joy and power of writing creative, intelligent, and persuasive essays.
  • To encourage today’s young minds to solve problems compassionately and creatively, without limiting their imaginations.
  • To encourage all participants to enjoy the live experience of intellectually and imaginatively stimulating friendly competition.
Primary Objectives of the Essay Topics:
  • To enhance and enlighten young people’s views and visions of the great adversities, diversities, and dynamics of our world.
  • To promote the spirit and power of creative and ingenious problem solving in the face of our world’s most pressing challenges.
  • To inspire young minds to exercise and enhance their imaginations and inspiration so that they can improve the condition of all humanity.
The essay topics and directions are similar to the ACT and SAT Reasoning Test essays. Each essay judge is provided topics and detailed instructions during the competition period in order to ensure that he or she objectively grade each student’s essay. The judges are active or retired English teachers, writers, editors, and even graduate school candidates with a great deal of experience working with young students.

Awards & Promotions for Top Essayists

The winners of Washington Essay Competitions – from both middle and high school students’ divisions – are awarded and recognized for their excellent essays by the Global Leaders, Inc. (GL). The competition winners can list their awards and recognitions on their personal resume or portfolio. They may even be able to get extra credit from their school teachers in English or other humanities classes.

Those students with the most exceptional essay writing skills and talents are promoted to compete in local, state, national, or even international writing competitions that offer impressive awards, scholarships, and other prizes. GL specifically identifies and recommends writing competitions that would be most appropriate for each individual student’s interests, talents, and goals. GL requires the active involvement of minor-age essayists’ parents or guardians in choosing and participating in any competitions that are recommended and promoted by GL coordinators.

Those exceptional essayists are also invited to publish in Internet-based media or referred to publishing opportunities specifically for young writers and leaders. Once the publication process has started, young students’ parents or guardians are expected to play active roles in assisting their children through the long, strenuous journey of publishing.

How Can I Help?

If you are an educator, school counselor, parent, or professional who just wants to assist today’s youth, you can help GL provide more enriching essay competition experiences to young students at your local community centers or schools. Your primary responsibilities are to promote, coordinate, administer, and manage the essay competitions only in your designated local communities. You are required to work in close partnership with GL coordinator(s) who leads the Washington Essay Competition on national level.

The following historic quotes by some of the most revered minds of humanity give all participants – especially adult volunteers and young writers – a profound understanding of the purpose of the Washington Essay Competition.

“Nine-tenths of education is encouragement.”
-- Anatole France

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
-- Albert Einstein

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”
-- Proverbs 29:18

All students, especially young multicultural scholars, can take part in any of the GL’s innovative educational and development programs – from elementary level basic mathematics instruction and college admission test preparation sessions to advanced essay writing seminars.
GL’s learning programs are designed in light of GL’s deeply-rooted mission of providing world-class quality educational services to each one of its young scholars. GL’s educational activities and programs are designed to assist each scholar in achieving his or her greatest academic and personal goals.

If GL does not have resources or competence to assist a particular young scholar’s specific educational needs adequately, GL can assist him or her in finding other educational resources or experts who can provide the needed educational support.

All scholars are welcomed to participate in any of GL’s educational programs as long as there is space and staff available to accommodate them adequately. If there is insufficient space or staff to accept additional scholars, they will be recorded on the waiting list. GL does not give priority to any particular scholars. GL accepts students on a “first come, first serve” basis.
Before a minor-age scholar can participate in GL’s activities or programs, both the scholar and his or her parent(s) or guardian(s) must have a personal meeting with one of the designated GL’s staff members.
