Washington Essay Competition

Washington Essay Competition is an ongoing event that invites participation from junior high and high school students living in the greater Washington D.C. area. The Competition seeks the participation of Asian American students since, as a minority population, they often face a socio-cultural disadvantage in English writing.

The Competition’s primary objective is to encourage young people to discover the joy and power of writing effective essays. All participating students are encouraged to enjoy the experience of a friendly and educational essay competition.

The essay topics attempt to enhance and enlighten young people’s views of the great diversity and dynamics of our world. The essay topics also attempt to promote the spirit and power of creative thinking.

The essay topics and directions are similar to the new ACT and SAT essays. Each essay judge is provided detailed instructions at the Competition in order to fairly and objectively grade each student’s essay. The judges are English teachers, writers, or editors.
